Hi, just a few questions to clear some confusion.

1/ looks like no Trim support for this drive when running on a Marvell 9182 6gb controller even if using the msachi drivers...correct??

2/ does the Intel 510 support GC at firmware level when running on the Marvell 9182 controller with the msachi drivers??????....what about using the Marvell 9xxxx drivers????

All Intel SSDs (X18, X25, 320, 510) have a form of garbage collection implemented within the firmware.

Garbage Collection is a very general term... there are different possible ways to implement it. Unfortunately, the information is generally not public since it is proprietary.

GC is always at the firmware level so it is OS/controller/driver independent.

Question -1,

/message/130962# 130962 Does Intel 510 firmware support GC when using Marvel 9182 controller???

****Answer, Garbage collection has nothing to do with the controller, GC is a firmware, this is part of a SSD, so it does not need to pass through anything, it is on the SSD. When a SSD becomes Idle for a period of time, around a hour, the drive will clear its own LBA, the newer SSD's get, the better GC, and faster GC will work..

Question -2, looks like no Trim support for this drive when running on a Marvell 9182 6gb controller even if using the msachi drivers...correct??

****Answer-2- Wrong, if TRIM, is a part of the OS, and the drive. If you have a OS with TRIM, and you have a SSD with TRIM, then the drive will get TRIMMED when the OS sends the command.

The reason a drive would not get the TRIM command through any controller, would be because the controller was set to a RAID array. The drives do not get the command when in RAID. Its not the controller, OS sends TRIM, drive gets TRIM command, only in RAID does the command get non-recognizable. Controllers have nothing to do with TRIM, if data can be sent back and forth between a OS and a drive, then TRIM can be sent.

Question 3- does the Intel 510 support GC at firmware level when running on the Marvell 9182 controller with the msachi drivers??????....what about using the Marvell 9xxxx drivers????

****Answer 3- Again, garbage collection is built into SSD, the OS, drivers, mobo, controller, have nothing to do with garbage collection. This is an independent operation of the SSD itself.

When looking at a post on Google I noticed this was the first post for google, still unanswered, so I am sure people come across this, I figured some people might want to have a answer on this. This is old, but still showing up in google.
