Intel 535 ssd locks up server

Running Ubuntu 14.04.3 with kernel 3.13.0-65-generic on an Intel 535 series ssd which I bought back in September. Ever since I bought it I have been unable to run smart tests on it they always manually abort thought this might be a firmware thing so I just let it go. Recently however my server has been locking up while over ssh, while playing a video over samba it is not for very long but it is annoying because it should not do this. I started out using rg20 firmware but updated this morning to rg21 (ssd toolbox on windows) which does not seem to make a difference. Also ran a full diagnostic test that passed 100% but does not show up under smartctl. I have replaced the sata cable as well which did not make a difference. This is the error:

Most of the errors are either write dma, read dma or flush cache errors. I would like to know a few things like is not being able to test your drives with smartmontools a firmware thing? Does it make a difference if it is mounted or not? Could this be a ubuntu kernel issue?

As we understand, your server has been locking up, and you would like to discard the SSD as a possible cause for the problem. Here are the most important recommendations we can provide based on your description of the issue:

- The Smarmontools you are using is outdated (6.2 from 2013) and does not detect the drive's information correctly. Since the Intel® SSD 535 is a relatively new drive, it is advised to update your monitoring tool. The most recent version can be obtained in the following link:

- Make sure you are using the most recent driver for your Storage controller.

- Update the BIOS for your system motherboard.

- Try using the drive in a different SATA port. For example, connect it to the first SATA port of the main storage controller.

Which mode is the Storage controller using (set in the BIOS)? (AHCI or IDE)

Computer is a Asus P5G41T-M Motherboard with a Core 2 Duo E6750 2.66 and 8GB RAM running headless with an IBM M1015 in the x16 slot. The BIOS on the MB is up to date. The version of smartmontools is the latest version in the LTS repo I'm noticing CentOS 7.1 is also using the same version. Aside from building it from source which I'm not sure if I want to do usually if they can update the repo version they will, I don't see any PPA's either. The driver for the storage controller as well as the ssd are part of the kernel and I am running the latest LTS kernel. Next time server is off will try different SATA port. The system is kind of old I doubt it supports those features not sure if I need them anyways. In order to check the BIOS I need to pop a video card into the system a hinderance I'm seriously considering upgrading over. However I'm sure its set to AHCI. Apparently there is not much I can do.
