Inspired by hpa's post that this might be related to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Host_Protected_Area HPA, I downloaded the Feature Tool from Hitachi at http://www.hitachigst.com/support/downloads/ http://www.hitachigst.com/support/downloads/ and followed the instructions here: http://www.acronis.com/r/support/en/kb/907/Removing_HPA.txt http://www.acronis.com/r/support/en/kb/907/Removing_HPA.txt

However, the tool shows both the current and max. capacity as 600.13 GB.

My hope was that the current value had somehow been set to 8 MB, and that I would be able to change it back to 600.13 GB.

I get similar results with hdparm under Linux:

hdparm -N

/dev/sda:

max sectors = 1172123568/1172123568, HPA is disabled

So HPA does not seem to be the culprit.

I also wanted to provide a little more information on my HW/SW setup.

- OS is Windows 7 64-bit. - Computer is a Lenoxo X201 laptop, 2.66 GHz i7 with an Intel 5 Series 6 SATA AHCI controller (PID 3B2F, REV 06). - BIOS Version shows as 1.22 (6QET52WW), 2010-08-23. - AHCI is enabled in the BIOS.

I don't know the version of the SATA controller device driver with certainty, but in the Windows installation on the previous hard drive that I migrated to the SSD the driver is 9.6.1014.

As mentioned earlier, trying to boot from the SSD just seems to hang the laptop at the BIOS screen.

Moving the SSD to my Lenovo T60p laptop produces the following error message during start-up:

ERROR2120: HDD0 (Hard disk drive) read error

I know it probably doesn't make a difference, but I used Acronis True Image to clone my previous hard drive onto the SSD two months ago.

I should add that the Hitachi tool shows

- Drive serial number: 00000001

- SMART disabled or not supported

- Firmware rev. 4PC10302

My SSD320 with 120GB and newest firmware died today after 2 1/2 months usage in my laptop with a few hours usage per week.

Unfortunatley I have bought the 320 SSD with 120GB versterday!

I still didn't use it because I fear this bug! Should I return the SSD and buy a 510 SDD instead of?
