Lifetime of Intel 535 SSD 120GB

Hello,

I would like to ask a question about the lifetime of my Intel SSD 535 which is 120GB large in space. I bought my SSD in 2015 in May. I installed Windows 7 just once and then I just updated it from Win7 to Win10 within the free update offer. I have read some recommendations how to work with SSD disks etc. I use this disk only for OS and some programs. At the beginning I used to store the temp files (temp files from chrome or firefox) on my second hard drive. Nowadays I do not do that. I have used the SSD tool from Intel from the beginning what I am using the disk. After one year I have written an email to eshop where I bought that disk with question if it is normal that lifetime of my SSD decreased by 10 percent within one year. I was told that it is normal. I am trying to maintain as much free space on disk as it possible. As you can see it is aproximately 75 percent. I am using this SSD in my laptop max 6-7 hours per day.

My question is simple. Is it really normal that after 2,5 years lifetime of my SSD decrerased nearly by 30 percent? What can I expect if the estimated lifetime will decrease to absolute zero?

Hello Martin1991,

Thanks for posting.Based on the SMART details you shared, the drive seems to be degrading faster than usual due to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Write_amplification write amplification. There's a firmware update that prevents further degradation caused by this issue on Intel® SSD 535 Series drives. You can download the fix from https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/26452/Write-Amp-Firmware-for-Intel-SSD-530-535-Series here. Please update the firmware and let us know how it goes.Best regards,Eugenio F.

Hello Martin1991,

Thanks for your reply.According to the messag showed by the tool, it seems the firmware update that fixes write amplification was either successful, or previously installed. The regular firmware version format is RG21. Firmware version RG2V is the one that corrects the issue and can only be installed with https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/26452/Write-Amp-Firmware-for-Intel-SSD-530-535-Series this software. Please keep using the drive as normal. If you notice a dramatic decrease in health again, please https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/contact-support.html contact our technical support for further assistance.Best regards,Eugenio F.

Hello Eugenio

thank you again for your help and suggestion. I will keep my eyes on it. I am just wondering if it is normal when the lifetime keep decreasing by 10 percent in one year? Because with this speed my disk will be dead in 10 years. But on the other hand a friend of mine has SSD from intel as well and he has it for 8 years already. He told me this information and he is also wondering about these parameters and numbers. He does not have any kind of problems with his SSD drives.

In my opinion it is strange that my SSD with my form of using already lost nearly 30 percent of lifetime. For the whole time I am trying to keep 75% free disk space! I do not install or uninstall programs often. It is strange.

Best regards

Martin B.
