Data migration and disk partitions.

I just recently bought an Intel SSD, 320 series 120 GB. I plan on using Intel's data migration to make the switch from my old HDD. However one thing I am not sure about is how the data migration software is going to handle my current HDD's partitions. I have three partitions in total, I dual boot XP on two of these partitions, and the third is just there for random storage.

My current HDD is 320 GB, here is the sizes for each partition:

Partition 1 - 136 GB (29 GB used)

Partition 2 - 171 GB (14 GB used)

Partition 3 - 12 GB (3 GB used)

So how exactly does the data migration handle partitions? Obviously due to the size of my HDD and the smaller size of the SSD, it won't be able to make a direct clone of the space allocated for each partition. So will I be able to choose how much GB each partition gets on the SSD, or it is all automatic?

Also how are the drive letters handled? Do they remain the same after the clone?

In spite of my frustration I had to laugh...u'rs was the first post I read after coming here when I couldn't use the migration utility...I mean, who the hell buys 500+ GB SSD drives???...all most folks want to do is probably move their C:\ drive over...

After installing the utility & using the manual function, I find out that the tool can only move the entire 200GB used space of my 500GB HHD onto my 80GB Intel320...I can't just migrate the 40GB that's on C:\ ?# ?$*!!!

OK...so much for the rant...I'm off to search for answers...

btw...I don't think I can use u'r method...as I want to keep the C:\ on the HHD (or merge it), reletter it & make the SSD the new C:\

time for a beer(s)....

color me silly for thinking a great sounding tool like "Intel data migration s/w" would solve problems as discussed above...

Should have ignored the marketing & just gone with a goggle search instead of spending time here at Intel..

Not working for me, even after looking at the manual... I select Manual clone mode; choose my source disk; choose my destination disk; then at the Move method step it just says "Cloning operation cannot continue because the source disk contains more data than will fit..."

I've tried right-clicking on the disk and going into disk properties to just select C:, but it isn't working for me.

(I'm trying to move a 36GB C: partition to a 120GB Intel 510 SSD. The full original disk is 1TB, so obviously it won't fit) The manual does imply that I can do this (around page 17, manual relayout) but those options don't show up in my install. I just downloaded the data migration software and chose the default install.

I'm underwhelmed by the quality of the migration software. This should be as easy as falling off a log, and indeed, it was when I did it last month moving an 80GB laptop disk to a 120GB ssd.

I guess the Migration software is incapable of cloning only one partition off the source disk. Instead of using the Intel migration software, use a program like EASEUS todo backup, which has a partition clone option for cloning and transferring specific partitions off a source disk. EASEUS is also free for the basic version, which should have the partition clone option.
