Read-only SSD 540 m.2

Hi,

I got at my work 10 Intel NUC 615 SYH with Intel SSD 540 m.2 and Windows 10

From some weeks ago, 3 of them run into problems.

Windows 10 doesnt boot and Linux run from USB can read almost all the data but cannot write on SSD

(deleting partitions failed, formating partitions failed, writing zeros on disk - dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda - failed).

All failures show in dmesg like "failed command: write dma".

This is what smartctl command reported on one of them:

SMART Error Log Version: 1

No Errors Logged

I updated both NUC and SSD to latest firmware, but no improvement occured.

I cannot send the SSDs to service (they are covered with 5 year guarantee) because of confidentiality of data stored on them.

What can I do?

eugen141,

Thanks for posting in our communities. We understand that three out of you ten your Intel® SSD 540s Series are on read-only mode.https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000022714/memory-and-storage.html Drives usually enter on read-only mode once the SSD depletes its lifetime writes. Are the other 2 failed drives showing similar SMART values? We would also like to check the SMART details captured by https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/27330/Intel-Solid-State-Drive-Toolbox Intel® SSD Toolbox for at least one of the affected drives. For that, you would have to connect one them as a secondary drive on a Windows* system. As for the warranty on the SSDs, we recommend to contact your https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/contact-support/emea-contact.html local support to check for replacement options.Best regards,Eugenio F.

Hi,

The other 2 show similar SMART values.

I cannot see details reported by Intel SSD Toolbox, because when I connect one of affected drives as secondary drive, Windows 10 refuse to boot.

Best regards,

Eugen.

Hello eugen141,

Thanks for your reply. Before defining if there's anything else you can do on these drives, please let us know the following:- What's the capacity of your Intel® SSD 540s Series?- Have you tried reinstalling Windows*? I wonder if the Windows* setup would be able to detect and format the drives.- What kind of workload goes through these machines?Best regards,Eugenio F.
