Intel SSD 530 not seen on OS install screen - ASRock C2750D4L

I have spent the whole day struggling with my new NAS build before I found this thread.

The SSD shows up as it should when I cold boot the server, trying to install OS from a UEFI USB key and poff, the drive is gone. I don't know how it would behave with a OS installed as it's impossible for me to install Windows Server 2012 R2 on it.

Cold Boot:

In the Boot Menu I choose to boot from "UEFI: My USB key" where the Win Server 2012 R2 install is located. At this point the SSD is listed as "P0: INTEL SSDSC2BW180A4". It doesn't show up twice as a UEFI drive. (Don't know if it should.)

Installation starts but when I get to the point where I should choose where to install WS, I get the message that no drives where found.

If I then exit the installer (server will reboot), the SSD is gone from the Boot Menu and the Bios can't find it either.

If I however boot into the UEFI Console or to the empty SSD, I can Ctrl+Alt+Del the machine and the SSD will still be there in the Boot Menu and in the Bios.

I have tried everything I can think of!

  • Load drivers in Windows Server installer
  • Disable Fast Boot
  • Disable Hot Plug
  • Tried another SATA port.
  • Set SATA speed to Gen 2 (force sata 2 on the sata 3 port)
  • Disable SATA Aggressive Link Power Mgmt
  • Tried all different combinations of Legacy / UEFI CSM settings I can think of.

From the original Bios settings, this is what I changed only for my liking:

  • Enabled Hard Disk S.M.A.R.T
  • Set Bootable Marvell 9230 SATAIII mode to None

Here's my hardware spec:

ASRock C2750D4I motherboard (BIOS/UEFI v1.80, BMC v0.14.0)

Intel 530 180GB SSD v.DC32, plugged in to first sata 3 port on intel controller (tried the second port as well with same problems)

2 x 2GB PC10600 DDR3 ECC

The SSD had DC12 firmware when I got it, but the first thing I did after I found this thread was to update it to DC32 but that didn't solve my problems.

I have reported this to ASRock as well with a link to this post and I would be more than happy to help ASRock and Intel to sort this out.

What I done sofar and seems to be working sofar is in Intel RST I switched of "switched of link power managment" this seems to relate

to dev sleep.

Also in windows power management I switched off "never switch my pc off"

Tks and rgds.

the old bios of my Asrock board already had the function to turn off link power management. At least in my situation this did not help.

Still having problems with my Intel 530 m.2.ssd on the z97x ud5h bk / windows 8.1 - 64 bits.

Did a clean Windows install added all the relevant updates / installed all Intel Chipset / RST and m.e.i drivers,

but still my Windows version is not stable.

Whilst using the internet browser and even opening my hotmail account Windows freezes up and I have to do

a hard reset, when I than re-boot the 530 is no longer recognised/visible.

I than have to switch off my desktop, restart go into the bios select p4 which is de 530 set this to first boot

priority, and than re-boot.

I also have Windows 8.1 on a Plextor M5p and this version is rock solid.

Meanwhile also issed a ticket via the Gigabyte support desk, but so far the combination is not working

100 percent satisfactory.

Any input / feedback / advice highly appreciated.

tks.

Hi Jensl,

I also tested with other SSD's and HDD's this morning and found that they work.

Here's what we know:

When installing Windows Server 2012

- SSD 530 on Intel ports in AHCI mode is NOT seen

- note: SSD 530 is seen on a different model of motherboard in AHCI mode

- SSD 530 on Intel ports in IDE mode is seen

- SSD 530 on Marvell ports in AHCI mode is seen

- other drives (SSD's and HDD's) on Intel ports in AHCI mode are seen

When installing Windows 8

- SSD 530 on Intel ports in AHCI mode is seen

Honestly, this is a real puzzler. Let me talk to engineering and I'll get back to you.

Hi ken-Intel,

Good to know that it's not just a bad mother board or SSD I got then. I really hope that you guys can figure this out fast. But with a Intel SoC, Intel controller and Intel SSD, it feels like you guys should be able to solve this pretty quickly.

If there is in fact a bug in the SSD firmware, what timeframe are we talking about until I can get a fix? I'm asking as I have been standing still here for three weeks now and I don't know how much longer I can wait. Would you recommend me to send the SSD back to where I bought it and buy anything else then the 530-series?
