Possible to upgrade w/ DVD on PATA?

Has anyone been able to upgrade the SSD firmware w/ their DVD drive on PATA?When I switch the SATA configuration to IDE mode, the DVD isn't picked up by the BIOS.The SATA configuration has to be set to AHCI and the SATA2 Controller must be set to AHC...
