Hi Eugenio

Thanks for your answer, but with linux, there is only smartctl or gsmartcontrol. However on the lenovo Forum (it's a intel 520 ssd 180GB, Lenovo oem version) I have found a firmware upgrade. https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/x230-SATA-errors-with-180GB-Intel-520-SSD-under-heavy-write-load/m-p/1540734# M55353 https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/x230-SATA-errors-with-180GB-Intel-520-SSD-under-heavy-write-load/m-p/1540734# M55353
The counter has stopped after the installation of Versiion LB3i. It wouldn't do any harm to mention in the Intel documentation that this firmware version fixes the power off retract count issue... Best regards H. Kramer

There are quite some threads on this forum about the Power-Off_Retract_Count like /thread/55642 https://communities.intel.com/thread/55642

/thread/31232 https://communities.intel.com/thread/31232

/thread/27813 https://communities.intel.com/thread/27813

Unfortunately I don't have any warranty; every time I shut down, it counts: HP 2560p with i7 2620m, Debian stretch). I have also tested the ssd in a DVD sata caddy in the 2560p, the SSD is the only drive!

Any hints?
Even tested with a second computer (Asus dual core): exactly the same situation (Debian stretch and Lubuntu 18.04 LTS
Model Family: Intel 520 Series SSDs

Device Model:     INTEL SSDSC2BW180A3

SMART Attributes Data Structure revision number: 10

Vendor Specific SMART Attributes with Thresholds:

ID# ATTRIBUTE_NAME FLAGS VALUE WORST THRESH FAIL RAW_VALUE

  5 Reallocated_Sector_Ct   -O--CK   100   100   000    -    0

  9 Power_On_Hours_and_Msec -O--CK   094   094   000    -    5376h+51m+45.180s

12 Power_Cycle_Count       -O--CK   095   095   000    -    5899

170 Available_Reservd_Space PO--CK   100   100   010    -    0

171 Program_Fail_Count      -O--CK   100   100   000    -    0

172 Erase_Fail_Count        -O--CK   100   100   000    -    0

174 Unexpect_Power_Loss_Ct  -O--CK   100   100   000    -    1256

183 Runtime_Bad_Block       -O--CK   100   100   000    -    544

184 End-to-End_Error        PO--CK   100   100   097    -    0

187 Uncorrectable_Error_Cnt -O--CK   100   100   000    -    0

192 Power-Off_Retract_Count -O--CK   100   100   000    -    1256

199 UDMA_CRC_Error_Count    -O--CK   100   100   000    -    0

225 Host_Writes_32MiB       -O--CK   100   100   000    -    178974

226 Workld_Media_Wear_Indic -O--CK   100   100   000    -    65535

227 Workld_Host_Reads_Perc  -O--CK   100   100   000    -    64

228 Workload_Minutes        -O--CK   100   100   000    -    65535

232 Available_Reservd_Space PO--CK   100   100   010    -    0

233 Media_Wearout_Indicator -O--CK   100   100   000    -    0

241 Host_Writes_32MiB       -O--CK   100   100   000    -    178974

242 Host_Reads_32MiB        -O--CK   100   100   000    -    327492

249 NAND_Writes_1GiB        PO--C-   100   100   000    -    8431

                            ||||||_ K auto-keep

                            |||||__ C event count

                            ||||___ R error rate

                            |||____ S speed/performance

                            ||_____ O updated online

                            |______ P prefailure warning

Is it risky to use this ssd?

Hello gipfeli,
Thanks for posting in our communities.The Power-Off Retract Count SMART attribute counts the number of unsafe or unexpected power loss. According to the https://www.intel.com/content/dam/www/public/us/en/documents/product-specifications/ssd-520-specification.pdf Intel® SSD 520 Series Product Specification this is not a pre-fail value.However, it may lead to data corruption. For comparison, please boot into Windows 10* and provide us with the following information:- SSD SMART details from https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/27460/Intel-Solid-State-Drive-Toolbox?v=t Intel® SSD Toolbox. Please use the export feature and save it on your system.- Please download and run the https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25293/Intel-System-Support-Utility-for-Windows-?product=91600 Intel® System Support Utility and select Save.Please attach both files to your next reply.Best regards,Eugenio F.

Hello H. Kramer,
Thanks for sharing the solution.We were not aware this is an OEM version of the SSD, these drives have different firmware versions from the retail models. However, this information could help other Lenovo* users.Best regards,Eugenio F.
