I have a RAMPAGE IV BLACK EDITION motherboard and after reading about it a bought an Intel 750 Series HHHL (CEM2.0) 400GB PCIe NVMe 3.0 x4 MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) SSDPEDMW400G4R1.

My mistake... 😞

After failing to boot from SSD… at Intel site I noticed the "Before you Buy" link that says:

A system based on an Intel® Z97 Chipset or an Intel® X99 Chipset.

My question: Is Intel going to support X79 chipsets in nearby future or I have to sell my NEW SSD 750 because a can't boot from it?

Is there any other way I can boot from Intel 750 SSD with my Asus RAMPAGE IV BLACK EDITION motherboard Intel® X79 Express Chipset.

Windows 7 does not have drivers for it, so we must download and put it during instalation.

Windows 8/8.1 has drivers, but after install, we should change for Intel driver which has better performance.

The Operating System must be installed in UEFI mode.

I have win 8,1 but i can't see ssd drive at uefi bios.

You tell me that booting from win 8,1 DVD and loading intel drivers i can install windows on it?

After first reboot, will my system see the ssd drive and boot from it, as was not vissible at bios?

You must upgrade ASUS MB BIOS if drive not seen in UEFI setup right now.

LATEST BIOS from Asus is at 2014/07/14.

I have it installed a week after asus released it.

Yes, if you boot from W8.1 DVD, there is no need to download any other driver, because 8.1 has native Microsoft driver for NVMe drives. But after installing 8.1 you should install the Intel driver that has better performance.

It seems Rampage IV bios does not have especific NVMe information, but it does not matter, if bios detect the drive, you should be able to install W8.1 in it.

I remenber seeing people in ROG Forum saying succesfull installing W7 and W8/8.1 in SSD 750 drives on RIVE mobos, and in other mobos that not officially support NVMe drives .

Remember that the drive is NVMe and it does not appear in PCH Storage Configuration, as it is not a SATA drive.

Lol...lol...

The first pic shows the NVMe drive being detected by bios, and your mobo also should show a similar detection:

And don't forget to do an UEFI instalation of W8.1, choosing as first boot option the DVD player with W8.1 and UEFI prefix.

Also, configure CSM and Secure Boot as follows:

If W8.1 UEFI install is correct, after installation you can disable CSM for faster boots, but only if your Graphic Card has an UEFI compatible firmware (UEFI GOP).

Hi to all,

sorry for my delayed post.

Unfortunately above settings didn't worked,

SSD drive was seen by windows but the error that pop up was:

That windows can boot from this device.

Here some photos from bios and windows error.

Any suggestion or ideas are welcomed.

Very weird, but this kind of error is typical of a missing driver.

Unzip the driver, boot from Windows 8.1 UEFI DVD with the flash driver attached to an USB 2.0 port.

When the Windows 8.1 installer asks ''Where do you want to install Windows", click on the "Load driver" button to install driver64.

The last message (screenshoot) was after i installed drivers from Intel.

Is there something else to suggest?

I'm running out of options.

I looking and to modified bios to load to my motherboard, to bypass this error message(as i has double bios features).

But this will be my last thing to try.

Have you tried changing Secure Boot to "Other OS"?

This issue is an interesting one because there are at least two people saying that a Sabertooth X79 and a P9X79, both with original unmodified bios 4801, dated from 2014/07/21,

The bios you updated, I suppose is the 0801, dated from 2014/07/14 (about the same time), also should be able to permit 750 boot.

No Valdir as a matter of fact i didn't tried to change to "Other Boot".

I had an Asus RAIDR Express PCIe SSD and this was a must when you installed windows.

From what i can understand, you mean to switch to "Other OS" and after first install switch again to "Win8" mode and select boot from windows loader partition?

I will give it a try and get back to you with an update.

It does work - I manage to boot from my intel 750 on my x79 asus rampage IV extreme yesterday and didn't have to mod the year old latest version of the factory asus bios that doesn't have nvme in it. Bios sees it as PATA SS. I cloned a windows 10 install from a sata drive onto the intel 750. Then after booting from a windows 10 iso USB key and using diskpart I assigned drive letters b and c to the reserved and primary partition and recreated/fixed the boot partition. Works well now and boots from the intel 750. Bios make sure pcie slots section is set to GEN3. Disable fastboot. Enable CSM. In CSM section (both legacy and UEFI) - on boot PCIE boot section change to UEFI first. Make sure the 750 is installed in one of the red slots on motherboard.

the diskpart instructions I found with google, in win-raid.com forums - googled around x79+diskpart+intel 750 or rampage IV extreme

the intel data migration tool (i.e. acronis) didn't work for me to clone other drive to the intel 750. Macrium Reflect worked well because it doesn't have to reboot to clone the c:\ drive.

benchmarks were good even on 2012 x79 motherboard.

As I mentioned before UEFI did not come bundled with the Windows so we must install it ourselves.

-You must now create a bootable usb with either Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 using the media creation manager

-After that reboot your PC, press F12, and choose UEFI - PMAP

-Press Shift+F10 to open up a console Window, now type everything except the italics

one caveat, tip works very well for windows 7 and 8 but limited in windows 10. The clone I did was from a hard drive that was running windows 10 partitioned in MBR and not the new GPT format of windows 10. While the drive does work I had the same problem as with my previous HD - it would not install the November 2015 windows 10 update. For that you need to install fresh from USB. I does update all other patches from Microsoft though. I tried to convert to partition to GPT and diskpart format into NTFS instead of FAT32 but that didn't work. In the end I just got the ISO from microsoft - google media creation tool - I did a fresh install and everything worked from the start without the need to tweek the partition or fix the boot

Thanks for sharing, gave me the confidence to go ahead and buy an Intel 1.2TB 750.

I had a couple of initial issues specific to my configuration that I thought may help others with the same Rampage IV Black.

Here's a bit more background first - just in case it's relevant.

Windows 10 Pro 1607 64bit (anniversary edition - was a clean build from USB image about 4 weeks ago (mid july 2016)

Rampage IV Black running bios 0801

Intel 4960X @ 4.8Ghz

16GB Corsair Dominator 2000Mhz Ram (4 sticks)

2 x Sandisk Extreme 120GB SSD running RAID 0 on Intel ports 1+2 - GPT formatted NTFS boot / OS disk (with 450MB recovery partition / 100MB EFI partition / ~ 200GB OS/data partition)

4 x Sandisk Extreme 120GB SSD running RAID 0 on Intel ports 3-6 - GPT formatted NTFS data disk

Asus Essence STX II 7.1 sound card

2 x SLI GTX 1080 (MSI Seahawk EK X watercooled)

I recently upgraded from 4way SLI GTX 580s (PCIE 2.0 cards) to 2way SLI GTX1080 (PCIE 3.0 cards)

With my configuration as per below with the new GTX 1080s I couldn't get my add-in Asus STX II sound card to work without disabling onboard realtek sound card. (more on that in a minute)

Original GTX 580 4 x SLI Configuration

CPU 4960X

slot1 x16 > GTX580 @PCIE2

slot2 x8 > GTX580 @PCIE2

slot3 x1 -

slot4 x8 > GTX580 @PCIE2

slot5 x1 > Asus Xonar Essence STX II @PCIE2

GTX1080 2 x SLI Configuration (pre Intel 750 install)

CPU 4960X

slot1 x16 > GTX1080 @PCIE3

slot2 x8 > GTX1080 @PCIE3

slot5 x1 > Asus Xonar Essence STX II @PCIE2

slot6 x8 -

So without moving anything and with the realtek onboard soundcard disable the above was working fine.

Then I tried installing the Intel 750 in slot 6 as per below... hmmm no green power led on SSD..

CPU 4960X

slot2 x8 > GTX1080 @PCIE3

slot3 x1 -

slot4 x8 -

slot5 x1 > Asus Xonar Essence STX II @PCIE2

slot6 x8 > Intel 750 1.2TB NVME SSD @PCIE3

Then I moved the Intel 750 SSD to slot 4 and the green led powered on!....

But... Now my front USB ports stopped working... (It's not the Intel SSD that stopped the ports working - it's a limitation of the motherboard PCIE lane assignments- so I moved the keyboard/mouse wireless receivers to other USB ports)

So the final working layout is below

CPU 4960X

slot1 x16 > GTX1080 @PCIE3

slot2 x8 > GTX1080 @PCIE3

slot3 x1 -

slot4 x8 > Intel 750 1.2TB NVME SSD @PCIE3

slot5 x1 > Asus Xonar Essence STX II @PCIE2

slot6 x8 -mailto:-@PCIE3 -@PCIE3

So after all that slot fiddling I then:

Set the bios to CSM disabled - rebooted

If you scroll right over to the right in the bios menu and keep going you'll see two Intel NVME bios entries, one shows the nvme and drive settings showing it running @ x4 PCIe3 speed and the other shows more detailed drive information. (nothing to change here - but at least the bios sees it!)

I then booted into windows installed the Intel NVME drivers 1.7.0.1002 x32-x64

I then installed the Intel 3.3.6 SSD toolbox and flashed the firmware on the drive to 8EV10174.

Rebooted

Intel SSD appeared in windows and I initialized and formatted ran AIDA64 disk benches and got 2800MB/s reads and 1000MB/s writes - All good!

Then all I did was clone my 2x Sandisk 120GB SSDs running in RAID 0 formatted with GPT NTFS on the motherboard Intel ports 1+2 to the new Intel 750 1.2TB NVME SSD with the trial version of Macrium reflect. (cloned the whole disk including EFI and rescue partitions - it was really fast!)

Then resized the Intel SSD with windows disk manager to take up the rest of the spare space on the drive (from 240GB > ~1TB formatted)

Shutdown

unplugged power to the old Sandisk SATA SSDs

Rebooted straight into windows on the new Intel 750 1.2TB NVME SSD - no other changes required.

Performance with AS SSD is the same as Seans - 2080MB/s read 1064MB/s write

Happy camper!
