Ravish165,

We also noticed that you did not mention what chipset was the intended. Please be aware that the Intel® SSD DC P3700 Series has a management capability which can conflict with desktop chipsets memory address and prevent booting. There may be workarounds but please be sure to test your intended configuration. With the intention to widen your possibilities only, we also would like to inform you that with the Intel® X99 Chipset it's likely to work and with the Intel® Z97 Chipset the card may only work in one PCIe* slot or using one memory DIMM ((Dual In-line Memory Module) to boot. The Intel® SSD 750 Series may be more compatible and offer similar performance without management SMBUS (System Management Bus) if the type of usage intended works with it.

I want to use Intel P3700 series NVMe PCIe SSD to read SMART attributes exposed by the device using our user land customized tool. The device will be placed on Gen 3.0 x4 motherboard having linux as OS (kernel 3.13) and RAM 4GB.

Please suggest if any other requirements are needed to read SMART data out of Intel P3700 series SSD.

Hello ravish165,

You will need to use Linux* kernel 3.19 for this drive. Please take a look at information in this link: http://downloadmirror.intel.com/23929/eng/Intel_Linux_NVMe_Driver_Reference_Guide_330602-002.pdf Intel® Linux* NVMe* Driver it is a PDF and you can find all the information you need on page 4. Intel recommends to use the Intel® SSD Datacenter Tool. You can find it here: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/23931/Intel-Solid-State-Drive-Data-Center-Tool Intel® Download Center

Hi aleki_intel,

Information was good and help to manage our requirements.

So if I upgrade kernel version to 3.19 then I can use intel p3700 series nvme ssd on my desktop system having Gen 3.0 x4 motherboard.

RAM can be upgraded to 8 GB,thats not an issue.

Actually I wanted to understand the hardware/software requirements to use intel p3700 series ssd on desktop systems. Will there be be any performance issue using this ssd on desktop.

aleki_intel,

Thanks for the information.

Can we use Intel P3500 series SSD on PCIe Gen 2.0 motherboard ? We don't want to write any heavy data on drive and just wanted to use drive to read SMART attributes using our utility based on nvme to read SMART attributes form nvme device. When our budget issues get resolved then will look forward to buy PCIe Gen 3.0 motherboards. But currently we have PCIe Gen 2.0 motherboard.

Our Base Board Information

 Manufacturer: Dell Inc.

 Product Name: 03NVJ6

 Version: A01

 Serial Number: ..CN7360406E040I.

ravish165,

The Intel® SSD DC P3500 Series may work as a data drive when connected to a PCIe Gen 2 slot as long as the system complies with the requirements. It is explained in the installation guide document provided before. I would like to mention that some older systems may not work with the NVMe* drive connected. There may be a resource conflict. If you intend to you a server chipset with PCIe 2.0 then the SSD may have no conflict. Remember to always consult with the board manufacturer for further assistance as well.

For using Intel 750 Series SSD on desktop systems as secondary drive I have planned for system configuration as:

Motherboard - Asus Z-97 A

CPU - 4th generation i3

Power Supply - 500W or 750W

RAM - DDR3 4 GB

Primary storage - Seagate ST3400832A 400GB 7200 RPM (Bootable device)

OS - Linux based Fedora core 20 or Cent OS 6.5

Kindly review and share opinion about system configuration (additional hardware needed?) for using Intel 750 series ssd on desktop systems. My requirement is NOT doing performance testing of SSD so need a system which can properly detect and read/write data blocks/log pages using NVMe standard from SSD.
