FWIW

Had the need to create a new Centos VM so I thought 'lets give give the 600P' another go...' (rev 121C)

So from scratch created Centos x64 using Centos-Everything-1511 OS

No problems. Then ran the updates, installed all updates. No problems so I rebooted

So maybe something in my Supermicro motherboard... but the Intel, Samsung and Crucial SSD also attached work perfectly

Hi Carlos

I am using a Supermicro X10SDV-TLN4F with Supermicro ECC 64Gb RAM running VMWare ESXi 6.0. This has a multiple HDDs attached: Intel NVMe 60P 512Gb, Crucial MX300 SSD, Western Digital Red 1Tb SATA HDD.

I am running Centos 6 & 7 x64 OS VMs. In February I moved the Centos 7 x64 VMs onto the Intel 600P and they ran very well! But within 7 days this started corrupting them so they have been moved back to the Crucial SSD HDD and they are all running fine now.

Interestingly the sole Windows VM is running OK on the Intel 600P.

Note that ESXi is booting from the Intel 600P and runs well. I checked the 600P firmware and I have version 109C.

I created a new Centos 7 x64 VM yesterday as a test. I installed the OS OK and then launched straight into installing the latest updates. When I rebooted after the updates finished installing it failed with a corrupt root filesystem... FWIW I also installed Centos plus Docker in February and this died the same way.. this was the first time this issue hit me so I thought it was something to do with Docker but now I know otherwise. The VMs are configured with VMware paravirtual or LSI controller, makes no difference

So yes, I do appreciate the Intel 600P is not a enterprise SSD and there are no specific Linux drivers, lt alone for ESXi so therefore my environment is a major distraction.

But the core issue as listed in the original Redhat bugzilla case definitely exists. And there are reports from other users in this forum who just run Linux

And at the end of the day I believe that the 600P is a hard drive and should be able to run Windows or Linux or ESXi (or other) operating systems.

hmm, I wonder what would happen if I installed a Windows OS and then installed VMWare Workstation and ran up a Centos VM?

Thank you for persisting with this,

Geoffrey

Hello Geoffrey.Mills,
Thank your for all your environment details. Even in a virtual machine it's likely that the issue may occur, but if you have the time and will to give it a test and let us know how it goes, we sure would appreciate the additional data.As soon as we have any updates, hopefully sometime this week, we'll pass them on to you.Best regards,Carlos A.

Hello giniek_06,

It's important to make sure that your Linux distribution supports NVMe boot natively, otherwise you may need to make some changes before the installer will recognize the drive.

While we don't support Linux on this drive just yet, we are working on it.

Best regards,
Carlos A.

I wrote the ISO image to a USB flash drive yesterday and managed to upgrade the firmware that way. However installing a Debian Testing ISO image from a few weeks ago still didn't give me a usable install as I got the same hangs as before. I will try with a beta from a few days ago and with the latest CentOS 7 image to see if the issue persists. If I had known that Intel sells SSDs that are not supported on Linux from the very beginning, I would never have bought it. Now I only hope the drive will be usable with Linux one day so it will not have been a complete waste of money. As for future M.2 drives I will probably stick with slightly more expensive but supported Samsung ones.

Hello Richard-R and SAJ2017,

The reason behind the Intel SSD 600p Series not being supported on Linux* (for now) is that this drive was originally designed to work with the Windows* Inbox NVMe drivers. This was done so the drive would be simpler to install and use since no additional drivers are required.

If you're using an OS that does not natively support NVMe* boot, it may only work as a secondary drive once this driver has been added. If your distribution already provides this support natively, you should have no problems once you have updated your firmware to the latest version. Personally, I've tested the 600p in CentOS* 7 and did not run into any problems (http://www.nvmexpress.org/resources/linux-driver-information/ NVMe* driver will be found in any Linux* OS distro using Kernel 3.3 or later).

As mentioned in the other thread (/thread/114839 SSD Firmware Update Tool: Bootable USB), there are many ways to create a bootable USB from an ISO in Linux*. https://unetbootin.github.io/ UNetbootin* being one of the most recommended ones, but your Linux* distribution may also include a tool for this purpose already.

You may also perform the ISO to USB creation process in a Windows* machine using https://rufus.akeo.ie/ Rufus*. Since the bootable image is OS independent, it doesn't matter where you create the media. As SAJ2017 mentioned, do make sure you have the Compatibility Support Module (CSM or "Legacy Mode") enabled on your BIOS.

NOTE: Any links provided for third party tools or sites are offered for your convenience and should not be viewed as an endorsement by Intel® of the content, products, or services offered there. We do not offer support for any third party tool mentioned here.

We hope this information helps, please let us know if you continue having issues.

Best regards,
Carlos A.

Hello Carlos,

I am still having issues with Release Candidate 1 of Debian 9 (Testing) and CentOS 7 in combination with an Intel 600P 512 GB SSD drive with the latest firmware on an HP Zbook Studio G3 with the latest BIOS. I don't have any problems running Debian 9 (Testing) off a USB hard drive or a Crucial 512 SATA SSD in a USB enclosure. So I suspect something may be going wrong with the Intel Skylake processor and chipset in combination with the Intel 600P SSD.

I will open a ticket with the CentOS and Debian projects for this and attach the log(s) I have obtained and hope this will be fixed in a future release of these respective Linux distributions. Alternatively I could try to build a more recent kernel and try to boot using that to see if the problem persists. I might look into this during the weekend.

Regards,

Sunil
