Hi Folks, The advice given by redux is all correct IMO, thanks to him (or her?) Yes it is frustrating attempting to depend on random forum posts for definitive information, that is simply the nature of forums.

It's odd to me Intel does not have one well-labeled link on their SSD info page that summarizes all the basic need-to-know information regarding their SSDs. It's really not that much information and not confusing if written well. I use the RST/iaStor driver on several Intel chipsets (P43, G45, X58, with the ICH10 or ICH10R) with my SSDs and it works great. I would not necessarily expect the Intel driver to work on AMD or NVIDIA chipsets or vice versa, given they likely have differences in architecture, not to mention the CPU differences. That they seem to work (in some cases) surprises me, but hey, great! Yes, the lack of Trim in RAID is a shame, but I imagine there is a major reason for that, hopefully that will be fixed soon, if possible.

What I like to do with the Intel SSD Toolbox (on one Vista 32 and two Win 7 64 PCs) is first run a Windows disk cleanup and delete uneeded files, remove old restore points via the option in disk cleanup, and then run the SSD Optimizer, the notion being to refresh all the recently deleted space on the SSD. Might be unnecessary given Trim, but I have seen no problems, and my three 80GB Intel G2's bench in the 390's - 410's on AS SSD. When and how Trim runs automatically is a mystery to me and I've never seen any explanation of that anywhere.

Besides using the standard OS settings that SSDs should have, I have decided not to "baby" my SSDs (except for archiving files) and use them as I would any HDD. So far I have had zero problems with the three Intel SSDs I own, I am very satisfied with them. Yes, other manufactures SSDs may have better write speeds in benchmark testing, but none of them that I am aware of provide a utility like SSD Toolbox, and in my usage I have never found the Intel SSDs wanting in any area.

One thing that confuses me is the different model variations in Intel's line. For example, I have two G2GNs and one G2GC, all X25-M 80GB. I have seen on retailers websites X25-M 80GB models called G2R5, or even G2XX. Are these simply cosmetic and/or differences in accessories, etc? I can never find anything on Intel's website regarding this.

I've read a whole bunch of posts about IDE, AHCI, Toolbox and trim. What a mess. I can't find head from tail.So many contradictory posts. Are some people giving opinions based on posts they've read.. which might be false to being with!?

Is their some official support forum from Intel where Intel support employees can give authoratative answers or because this is a community forum anything goes? I really don't want to bother with I-am-Not-sure answers. I need definite yes or no.

I would like to see an official FAQ from intel answering the common questions. Such as.. does Trim work on IDE port or not (regardles if I should be using AHCI)

I have seen two visible camps around this question.

When Windows 7 first came out the only driver that automatically passed the TRIM command was the default MS ACHI driver. Subsequently Intel released the RST 9.6 driver that could automatically pass the TRIM command. Intel recommends using the RST 9.6 driver as it optimises performance and endurance. http://download.intel.com/support/ssdc/hpssd/sb/newusersguide.pdf http://download.intel.com/support/ssdc/hpssd/sb/newusersguide.pdf

When RST 9.6 came out there was a mistake in the documentation. If you have an Intel SSD that is a non-member of a raid array it will allow TRIM. If it is a member of the raid array it will not enable TRIM.

If you have the option always use AHCI in preference to IDE. On the second post in this thread Intel explain why it is better to use AHCI.

/thread/10495?tstart=0 http://communities.intel.com/thread/10495?tstart=0

There is loads of official help here:

http://www.intel.com/p/en_US/support/highlights/ssdc/x25m-80gb http://www.intel.com/p/en_US/support/highlights/ssdc/x25m-80gb

My AS SSD benchmark actually went down a few points.

Are you guys using the RST?

And what about the Toolbox? The one PDF you sent the link for says if you are using Windows 7 you don't need the Toolbox. I have also seen a lot people say you shouldn't run the Optimizer or System Configuration Tuner.

When I do run the System Configuration Tuner it says to turn on DIPM, what does that do?

Will

If you are running Window 7 with either the default MS AHCI driver or the RST driver 9.6 you do not need the toolbox trim feature as it will be trimming automatically.

There is nothing stopping you running a manual trim from the toolbox but you don't need to. There are however other tools in the toolbox that make it worth installing.

Run the System Configuration Tuner and it will automatically set the right system settings for you as defined by Intel. The toolbox also has other useful tools like SMART info and diagnostic tools.

EDIT: DIPM = Device-Initiated Link Power Management. The System Config Tuner will take any action that may be required when you run it.

Ok.. I wish people recommending RST to qualify that recommendation with the fact that it's only for users with Intel chipsets. I have read posts about trim working only with MS's AHCI driver or with RST. This implies I can use RST. A lot of us use Intel SSD with motherboards from other vendors like Asus and Gigabyte withg AMD CPUs.

I take it you bought an Nvidia chipset? I did that once but it was a really bad idea. I'd suggest you buy an Intel chipset, use an Intel processor and an Intel SSD. Compatibility should always be a factor when you're researching what PC or components to buy.

I have an AMD cpu and chipset. I can use MS's AHCI fine. An SSD is just a drive. It should work with any motherboard & chipset & CPU.

Redux,

You said; There is nothing stopping you running a manual trim from the toolbox but you don't need to.

The Optimizer is what does the Trim right?

Except if your running Windows 7 and AHCI you don't need to use that?

You're the one suggesting that the Intel Rapid Storage Technology should work on an AMD chipset. Why should Intel make and support software for products they don't sell and to be used by their competitors? It doesn't make business sense. Also if you want to use Intel software you should have bought Intel products. If you look at the read me file on the Intel Rapid Storage Technology download it gives you compatibility advice.

I NEVER said Intel Rapid Storage Technology should work on an AMD chips. I said that if one recommends using Rapid Storage Technology then mention that it's for Intel chipsets only. I have AMD chipset and I don't want to install IRST and find out it screwed up my computer and it doesn't boot anymore because it replaced my current working drivers. I get the sense some people think that if I am using an Intel SSD, posting on an Intel forum that I am also using an Intel motherboard and chipset!
