When I tried to run SSD Optimizer it failed with error: No Optimization due to "Volume Shadow Copy Service data". Tried fixes suggested in this forum but they did not help. So, did a repair install of Windows XP and was able to do Optimization. After applying all Windows Updates same problem returned. CMD "vssadmin list shadows" was returning 0x8000ffff. Internet search lead to fact that 0x8000ffff could be caused by service "Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider" not started. Search for "Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider" lead me to http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/winservergen/thread/413d4cbe-feb1-4a29-b07f-28e4c80ee814 http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/winservergen/thread/413d4cbe-feb1-4a29-b07f-28e4c80ee814 , there a post by Chang Yin suggested: "following commands one-by-one to manually register these DLL files (most of similar problems can be resolved after this):

cd %systemroot%\system32

net stop vss

net stop swprv

regsvr32 ole32.dll

regsvr32 vss_ps.dll

Vssvc /Register

regsvr32 /i swprv.dll

regsvr32 /i eventcls.dll

regsvr32 es.dll

regsvr32 stdprov.dll

regsvr32 vssui.dll

regsvr32 msxml.dll

regsvr32 msxml3.dll

regsvr32 msxml4.dll

Then, try reboot the server to see how it goes."

After following his instructions was able to run CMD "vssadmin list shadows" and could do Optimizations.
